Route of the Legend of Carmen

An engaging way to explore the city of Seville and learn more about the opera Carmen is following in her tracks! This tour is dedicated to one of the most passionate characters in opera – Carmen, created by Prosper Mérimée and obtained lasting fame thanks to the French composer George Bizet.

The search for traces of Carmen, Don Jose and the bullfighter Escamillo starts at the old tobacco factory. The huge building, which houses today Seville´s University, was the location where the thousands of female cigarette rollers, among them, Carmen, came to work. From there we follow the narrow winding streets where this gipsy woman used to dance, in direction to the former gypsy quarter, called Triana on the other side of the river, also known as the cradle of flamenco art.

Then we will cross Seville´s first permanent bridge built by pupils of Gustave Eiffel towards the bullring - "La Maestranza", considered one of the finest in Spain and one of the oldest and most important arenas worldwide. It’s just there where the last act of the opera takes place and where Carmen finally met her death.
